Water Usage

This summer has been a very hot and dry season and we have had a consistently high consumption of water for the months of June and July. The Town has a license for only so much water to be pumped from our raw water sources, which includes an allowed amount to be pumped at any given time. This does not increase because of hot and dry weather and if this weather continues and water consumption remains high, watering restrictions will need to come into effect. At this time we would like to advise all residents to be wise in the use of their water. Most of the concern is in our outdoor water usage, below are a few guidelines to follow.

Watering the lawn once every three to five days makes better use of our water than watering it every day.
Your lawn doesn’t need much water to thrive, as a general rule; 2 to 3 cm (1 inch) of water per week is adequate. This will produce deep roots and stronger grass, daily watering results in shallow roots and weaker grass.
Set an empty tuna can or a frisbee near the sprinkler when it is full your lawn has had enough.
When you water your lawn, do it in the cool morning when winds tend to be light, temperatures cool and humidity is higher. This avoids evaporation and do not water the pavement.
Do not water your lawn on windy days and do not turn on sprinklers for the entire day.
Cutting your grass higher also reduces evaporation and increases moisture.
Use a rain barrel to catch water for watering plants and flowers.

We would like to thank many of you who have been conscientious and wise in the use of water, and let us all work together to conserve our vital resource of water.

Thank you,
