Fogging In Cardston
Continues this year July through August
10:00 pm – 12:00 pm

Since 2003, the threat of the West Nile Virus has hit home in Alberta, the Town of Cardston is working to protect our residents from this and other nuisances of mosquitoes. This article is intended to provide basic information on the control program by answering frequently-asked questions, and by informing you of further ways you can protect yourself and your family from West Nile Virus.

#1 Hasn’t the Town fogged for mosquitoes in the past year?
Yes the Town of Cardston fogged for mosquitoes in July of last year and had significantly less mosquitoes during that time. In an effort to provide comfortable summer months for its residents Cardston will be fogging for mosquitoes again this year starting around the end of June – exact dates will be posted in the paper.

#2 Is fogging for West Nile Virus in this area necessary?
Alberta Environment has identified Cardston as a medium-risk zone for West Nile Virus, based on data gathered from their surveillance and trapping program in rural areas immediately surrounding Cardston where standing water and tall grass are prevalent. Their findings indicate that Culex mosquitoes are increasing in the area, and fogging is a necessary step to control them.

#3 What symptoms are associated with West Nile Virus?
Symptoms caused by West Nile Virus vary, categorized within non-neurological or the more severe neurological syndromes.

Non-Neurological syndrome symptoms include headache, fever, chills, body aches, rash and/or swollen glands.

Neurological syndrome symptoms include fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, muscle weakness, tremors, paralysis, and/or coma.

#4 Who can contract West Nile Virus?
Everyone! Mosquitoes are not discriminating. However, the effect of the virus is generally more pronounced in older adults; they tend to be more susceptible to neurological syndrome symptoms. Notwithstanding, the virus can be debilitating to anyone, resulting in significant time off work and undue suffering.

#5 What chemical is used for protecting Cardston?
Malathion is fogged by certified insecticide workers. Regarding malathion, Health Canada reported, “Even for someone who is outdoors during the spray application, these application rates would result in estimated exposures that are far below the exposures that produce adverse effects.” Therefore, exposure to malathion in Cardston is safe for you, your family, your outdoor possessions, and your pets.

To further reduce exposure to malathion, you may consider the following suggestions. These are not dire requirements to ensure your well-being; only ideas for those yet with concern:

• Whenever possible, remain indoors during and for 20 minutes after fogging while the malathion disperses;
• Close all windows and doors;
• Bring laundry, toys and pets indoors before fogging begins;
• Cover outdoor furniture, ornaments and play equipment or rinse them off with water after fogging is finished;
• Wash homegrown produce with water before cooking or eating them;
• Rinse exposed skin with water;
• Wash clothes that come in direct contact with malathion separately.

#6 What else can I do to protect myself from West Nile Virus?
• Use insect repellents with DEET, applying sparingly to clothing and skin.
• Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants, and a hat.
• Consider staying indoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
• Make sure there is no standing water or tall grass in your yard where mosquitoes can lay their eggs.
• Clean out eaves troughs regularly to prevent clogs that trap water.
• Ensure that windows and door screens have no holes or openings.
