Relief Society Program Strengthens Mormon Women

women02_medium
More than five and a half million Mormon women in over 170 countries will be invited to attend or watch via satellite the annual worldwide Relief Society general meeting of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Saturday, 29 September.

This year marks the 165th anniversary of the Relief Society — an organization designed specifically for the women of the Church.

The small founding group in Nauvoo, Illinois, in the mid-1800s comprised women from different backgrounds and circumstances — three of them were in their late teens, some were raising families and others were single. Church President Joseph Smith made the Relief Society an official part of the Church organization. FULL STORY

Community Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving

In the past several months we have all become concerned about the severe lack of rain in our area. Thankfully, to this point, conditions have not become intolerable, but we recognize from this that we are so dependent upon the blessings of heaven to provide for our needs and the continued prosperity and that this wonderful land has so abundantly given us. We wish to always give thanks and praise to the God of us all for what we have and to this end we are inviting the community to join with us in a special day of prayer and thanksgiving on September 30, 2007. We note that many faith communities and individuals have already been petitioning heaven to temper the elements for our needs and that they will continue to do so. We want to join together these expressions of faith and concern and to unify our desires and recognize that God loves all of his children and is mindful of every prayer.

Many may wish to pray and worship on that day in their own faith communities and groups, but if you would be willing to join with us in a united expression of our love of God and concern for our land we invite you to meet with us for a prayer meeting at the Cardston Alberta Stake Center (338 5th Ave. E, Cardston) at 7:00 p.m. on September 30, 2007.

Sincerely

SALT LAKE CITY 24 September 2007 Five weeks after an 8.0 earthquake devastated Pisco, Peru, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continues to work with other organizations to send more relief supplies to the affected area.

Through a coordinated effort between the Church, Gossner Foods, DHL International and ASTAR Air Cargo, 40,000 pounds of hygiene kits, blankets, school kits and ultra-high temperature milk — a milk that has been specially processed and packaged so that no refrigeration is required until it is opened — will be delivered to Pisco.
