GROUND BEEF AND GROUND BEEF PATTIES SOLD AT SAFEWAY AND INDEPENDENT GROCERY STORES MAY CONTAIN E. coli O157:H7 BACTERIA

The public warning issued on July 6, 2007 has been updated to provide additional information to help identify the affected frozen ground beef patties sold from some of the independent grocery stores.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Canada Safeway are warning the public not to consume the fresh and frozen ground beef products listed below because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.

As the food safety investigation has progressed, CFIA had found that some independent grocery stores may have repackaged the frozen ground beef patties into smaller sizes with an in-store label applied. Therefore, consumers who have purchased frozen ground beef patties from independent grocery stores during the time periods described below, and are unsure that it is affected product, should contact the retail store to determine if the product purchased is affected. Additionally, it has been discovered that the frozen Butcher's Cut ground beef patties were also sold at some independent grocery stores.

The following products are affected by this alert:

1. Fresh ground beef (lean, regular, extra lean and market trim) The fresh ground beef products were sold at Safeway and some independent grocery stores in British Columbia and Alberta between May 24 and June 5, 2007 and bear Best Before dates from May 25 to June 6 inclusively.

Consumers who have purchased fresh ground beef products from independent stores during the time periods described above, and are unsure that it is affected product, should contact the retail store to determine if the product purchased is affected.

2. Butcher's Cut frozen ground beef patties 1.13 kg
The affected patties, bearing UPC 58200 21604 and a Julian code date of 143, were sold on and after May 24, 2007, at Safeway stores and also at some independent grocery stores in Western Canada and in Ontario, west of Thunder Bay.

3. Sunny Dawn frozen ground beef patties
The affected patties, bearing Julian date 143-07, were sold on or after May 24, 2007 at some independent grocery stores in Western Canada, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and in Ontario west of Thunder Bay.

Consumers who have purchased the products described above, and have them in their freezers, are advised not to consume these products.

There have been five reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

Canada Safeway, Calgary, Alberta is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

Hundreds Volunteer at School

Heavy rain didn't dampen spirits when almost 300 Church members spent a day clearing overgrown shrubs, laying decking, and building steps at a local school. The project was part of the international Helping Hands program, and the Newbury effort was just one of thousands of events organized to clean up schools, parks, and civic buildings across the country.

Residential Break-in

On July 9th, 2007 between 0900 hours and 1600 hours a residential break and enter occurred on 2nd Street West between ,1st Avenue and 2nd" Avenue West. Stolen from the residence was approximately $3000 and a Cross Fox Fur.
The money consisted of approximately 20 one hundred dollar bills and a large glass Jar of change. The change consist of toonies, loonies, quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies.
If anyone enters your business with either large amounts of change or a large quantity of $100 dollar bills, please make note (record name if possible) of the subject(s) and advise police of the same.

PBS' "The Mormon" on DVD

Yet in recent decades the Mormon Church has transformed itself from a fringe sect into a thriving religion that embraces mainstream American values; its members include prominent and powerful politicians, university presidents, and corporate leaders.

Citizen of the Year Award

Service clubs, appointed boards or private citizens or groups of citizens are invited to nominate a person for the Citizen of the Year Award. No employee or elected official presently serving the Town of Cardston is eligible for nomination. Consideration should be given to the time, dedication and impact of service to senior Citizens, or any other service deemed to be worthy of recognition. The recognized service may be a part of the nominees normal occupation, but should be for that service beyond the call of duty. The nominee should be a current resident of the area. Nominations are to be confidential from the nominee until a decision is made by the judges. Applications can be picked up at the Town Office.

Nominations are to be lodged at the Town Office no later than noon July 31, 2007.

Church Aids Flood Victims in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas

The Church has provided over 12,000 cleaning kits and 18,000 hygiene kits to those in need in 14 separate locations in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas after storms pounded the area with heavy rain for two weeks.

Stolen Purse

A brown leather purse with embroidery on the side, wide shoulder strap, was stolen from van within the last week. Purse contained driver's license, birth certificate, AB health card, master card, and a large amount of cash.

Toothpaste Warning

Additional serious harmful bacteria potentially found in counterfeit toothpaste

OTTAWA – Further to a warning issued on June 29, Health Canada is warning Canadians not to use a counterfeit product falsely labelled as Colgate Fluoride Toothpaste Maximum Cavity Protection. Ongoing testing has resulted in preliminary evidence of a further, potentially harmful bacterial contamination. If confirmed, the presence of this bacterium could pose a serious health risk.

Health Canada will notify Canadians if it is determined that there is a health risk once final testing is completed.

Consumers who have this counterfeit product are advised to discontinue use immediately and not to use their toothbrush. The product should be kept out of the reach of children. Consumers should seal the tube and put the tube in a sealed bag. They should also wash their hands after handling the tube. Health Canada will provide additional instructions on the proper disposal of the product if needed.

Consumers who have this product should contact Health Canada’s Health Products and Food Branch Inspectorate at 1-800-267-9675.

The counterfeit product falsely labelled as Colgate Fluoride Toothpaste Maximum Cavity Protection is marked as 100 ml, and is labelled as “Manufactured in South Africa.” It contains misspellings including “isclinically” “SOUTH AFRLCA” and “South African Dental Assoxiation.”

This counterfeit toothpaste product was found in the discount chain “Everything for a Dollar Store.” Canadian distributors are cooperating in the investigation and have removed the product from their shelves.

Genuine Colgate toothpaste approved for sale in Canada is safe and is labelled in English and French. Additionally, fluoride-containing toothpaste that has been approved for sale in Canada will contain either an eight-digit Drug Identification Number (DIN) or a Natural Product Number (NPN).
